The Project Area - West Flanders
The province is an autonomous level of government next to other levels such as the European level, the Federal State, the regions and the communities. The Province of West Flanders employs approximately 1,000 people and is active in various policy areas: tourism, sports, culture, economy, agriculture, education, welfare, environment, infrastructure, regional development, external relations and safety.
Globalisation is making the world smaller every day and the Province of West Flanders responds to this trend through a dynamic international policy. Besides the close co-operation with its neighbouring regions in the North of France, Zeeland and South-East England, the Province also fosters projects and interesting exchanges with its twin regions in Romania, Hungary and Poland.
Furthermore, in 2000 the Province of West Flanders signed a treaty of friendship with the Chinese province of Zhejiang. This treaty mainly focuses on sustainable economics and education, striving to increase the international aspect of West Flanders’ economy and academic network.
